Chloride

Table of contents

Chloride is an electrolyte your blood test measures to check how well your body balances fluids and acid-base status, usually as part of a metabolic panel. In most adults the normal serum range is about 96 to 106 mEq/L.

What chloride measures

Chloride is a negatively charged electrolyte that works closely with sodium to help hold the right amount of fluid inside and outside your cells. It also helps maintain your acid-base balance, keeping blood from becoming too acidic or too alkaline. Because it shifts alongside other electrolytes, it gives your clinician a window into hydration and kidney function.

What high or low levels mean

A high chloride level (hyperchloremia) often points to dehydration, so your body holds a higher concentration of electrolytes. It can also reflect kidney problems, an acid-base disturbance such as metabolic acidosis, or certain medications. A low level (hypochloremia) usually follows fluid loss from prolonged vomiting, heavy sweating, or some diuretics, and can accompany conditions that make the blood more alkaline. Small shifts inside or just outside the range are common and rarely a concern on their own. Your clinician almost always reads chloride together with sodium and bicarbonate to see the full picture. Follow up if your result is well outside the range, if it keeps trending in one direction, or if you have symptoms like ongoing vomiting, weakness, or confusion.

Chloride FAQ

What does it mean if your chloride is high?

High chloride most often reflects dehydration or excess fluid loss, but it can also signal a kidney or acid-base problem. Your clinician interprets it alongside sodium, bicarbonate, and your symptoms before drawing conclusions.

Can diet affect chloride levels?

Yes. Chloride comes largely from table salt (sodium chloride), so very high or very low salt intake and your fluid intake can nudge your level. Day-to-day diet rarely causes a clinically meaningful change on its own.

Should you worry about a slightly abnormal result?

Usually not. Minor shifts are common and often resolve on their own. Persistent or large changes, or results paired with symptoms, are what prompt further testing.

Read alongside your sodium, potassium, and bicarbonate results for a fuller view of your electrolyte and acid-base balance.
